Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Sets $1.5 Trillion Economic Target at NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting

At the 11th NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay outlined an ambitious $1.5 trillion economic vision by 2036, highlighting 97% BharatNet completion, strong women workforce participation, and major infrastructure demands including AIIMS Madurai, while reiterating opposition to NEET-based state admissions.

At the 11th Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog held in New Delhi, themed around inclusive development for Viksit Bharat@2047, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay presented an ambitious roadmap projecting a $1.5 trillion state economy by 2036.

During the high-level deliberations, Vijay highlighted that Tamil Nadu has achieved 97 percent completion of the BharatNet project, underscoring the state’s expanding digital infrastructure reach. He further noted Tamil Nadu’s position as the second-largest economy in India and emphasized that women constitute 42 percent of the state’s workforce, reflecting its significant gender inclusion in economic participation.

Outlining his development agenda, the Chief Minister sought central assistance for key sectors including education, rural housing, water supply systems, the establishment of AIIMS Madurai in Madurai, and the development of high-speed rail connectivity. He also reiterated opposition to the implementation of NEET for state-level medical admissions, maintaining the state’s long-standing policy stance on the issue.

The meeting witnessed remarks from the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, who commended Vijay’s development vision and collaborative approach. Observers noted that his tone reflected a strengthening of cooperative federalism and a renewed effort to enhance Centre–state coordination after previous periods of political divergence.
